Young Audiences Charter School To Open At Kate Middleton Campus in Fall of 2013

The only open-enrollment charter school on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish is now open for enrollment
Published: March 8, 2013

Since 1962 the local non-profit organization Young Audiences of Louisiana has led the state of Louisiana in arts education and quality after-school programs. Now, thanks to the actions of the Jefferson Parish School Board, the non-profit will launch a new open-enrollment, arts-integrated charter school at the Kate Middleton Campus in Gretna for the 2013-14 school year.

Young Audiences Executive Director Rickie Nutik said, “After six years of providing deep academic instruction and arts integration for students in Jefferson Parish, Young Audiences has developed the capacity to establish a school that will emphasize academic excellence and use research-based Young Audiences arts-integration programs to engage students and support teaching and learning.”

Young Audiences Charter School at Kate Middleton will open its doors in August to any Jefferson Parish student entering Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. Students must reside in Jefferson Parish. Each following academic year, the school will add one grade to serve students in grades K-8 by Fall, 2018.

Enrollment is limited to 388 students. Parents are encouraged to visit www.yacharterschool.org or e-mail charter@ya4la.org for enrollment information. Applications can be downloaded at http://bit.ly/YACharterSchool

Young Audiences has operated after-school programs throughout Jefferson Parish that promote academic excellence and social growth. External evaluations by SEDL (Southwest Educational Development Laboratory) have shown that students enrolled in Young Audiences after-school programs in Jefferson Parish schools outperformed their peers on standardized tests. In addition, students in these programs showed fewer disciplinary reports and increased school attendance.

Young Audiences of Louisiana was founded in 1962 with the mission to inspire, empower, and connect children and communities through education, arts, and culture. Over the last 51 years the organization has grown from presenting school performances of chamber music to our current position as the states largest provider of arts-integrated and afterschool programs. In 2012 Young Audiences of Louisiana employed over 250 trained teaching artists and educators to provide afterschool programs for over 2,200 students free-of-charge in the Greater New Orleans area.
