Jazz at Congo Square

Join celebrated local poet Chuck Perkins in an original poetry reading that hits close to home. Perkins has performed in New York poetry clubs, Chicago coffee shops, Parisan festivals, New Orleans jazz clubs and now in your classroom! Perkins' distinctive lyrical flow pays homage to the great city he calls home, New Orleans. As he walks students through many aspects of New Orleans culture in his own unique style, Chuck models just how cool poetry can be! Performances can be stylized to suit any age group. About Chuck Perkins

Chuck Perkins is a favorite performer in Chicago, where he lived for ten years, and in New Orleans, to which he returned in 2002. Chuck has performed with former Poet Laureate Mark Strand, Mark Smith - the creator of the Poetry Slam, and Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets. He has headlined at the Guild Complex in Chicago, with his most notable show in tribute to Gil Scott Heron. Chuck has also been featured in poetry venues, high schools, and colleges around the country. His poetry appears in the best selling anthology Spoken Word Revolution. He has performed with many of New Orleans top musicians and was featured in the French documentary N. O. Ballade, as well as several other films shot in New Orleans. He created his Avante Guard Circus "Voices of the Big Easy" in 2004. It’s a broad panorama of New Orleans' rich musical and literary culture, fusing performances that are alternately passionate and whimsical, poignant and fun. The Voices of the Big Easy crew consists of brass, bass, and percussion, Mardi Gras Indian Spy Boy Honey, and his own poetic influence. Voices have performed in some of New Orleans' best musical venues and had its first international performance at the Banlieues Bleues Blues festival of Paris in February of 2009.
