Watotos of Kumbuka
Founded in 2018 by Nailah Smith, Watotos of Kumbuka is a New Orleans-based African dance group committed to preserving and celebrating the rich traditions of African dance. The group’s name, derived from Swahili, means “Children of Remember,” symbolizing their mission to honor their cultural heritage while passing it on to future generations.
Watotos of Kumbuka traces its roots to the Kumbuka Traditional African Dance Company, founded in 1981, the first traditional African dance company in Louisiana. As a member of Kumbuka, Nailah Smith saw the growing demand for her expertise and envisioned a collective that would carry forward the lineage, mentorship, and traditions of Kumbuka.
Since its inception, Watotos of Kumbuka has become a vibrant cultural presence in New Orleans. The group has performed at festivals, cultural events, and educational workshops, inspiring audiences with dynamic performances that embody the spirit and legacy of African dance. Through their artistry, they continue to honor their ancestors, celebrate African culture, and build a bridge between past and present.
