YALA Hosts Second Annual Super Summer Event: A Free Arts Education Experience for Children

Updated 7/12/2022

Young Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) will host the second annual Super Summer Events in the Broadmoor neighborhood on June 18th at Rosa F. Keller Library, in the Treme-Lafitte neighborhood on June 25th on the Lafitte Greenway, and in the Uptown neighborhood on July 30th. YALA’s Super Summer community events are interactive arts education experiences designed to promote literacy and connect with children, infant to age 8, because YALA believes that arts education is super. The theme of this year’s Super Summer is “The Future is Bright,” due to the endless opportunities for child development provided by the arts.

“Our summer events are geared towards continuing the cognitive and social-emotional development of our young learners,” said Renee Benson, YALA’s Director of Education. “When we include our caregivers, it creates a special moment for the child because it provides a shared learning experience.”

YALA will partner with Broadmoor Improvement Association, New Orleans Public Library, Friends of Lafitte Greenway, Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center, We Play Center, and The Parenting Center at Children’s Hospital to create three mornings of fun.

As the Louisiana affiliate of Wolf Trap Institute Early Learning Through the Arts, YALA’s early learning workshops are led by professional teaching artists who have been trained in child development and have years of experience crafting active learning experiences through the arts. The first Super Summer event is scheduled for June 18th and will also be YALA’s second annual Juneteenth Celebration for children and families.

“A lot of what we love about New Orleans is because of the rich culture brought here by enslaved Africans,” said Jenny James, Executive Director of YALA. “Celebrating Juneteenth through the arts gives children the opportunity to experience these rich contributions and understand their significance within the culture of our community.”

Each Super Summer event will provide an engaging morning singalong and two interactive workshop experiences to promote literacy and encourage creativity. Events will also feature a local bookstore and provide an opportunity for children to sign up for their first library card. All children in attendance will receive a free book, a snack, an activity packet, crayons, and a surprise special gift. For parents who need a morning boost, coffee will be provided by HEY! Coffee Co. This arts event is provided free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of The Helis Foundation; however, registration is required.

It sounds like fun, because it is. Your little ones will agree. Register for Young Audiences of Louisiana’s Super Summer 2022 at www.ya4la.org/super.
